Crabs shed their shell as they grow the way snakes do. This is one way to find crab shells in the lagoon. The second way is when they have been exposed to predation, usually from an octopus.

This is the most common crab shell I find here in Tahiti. I call it the Guardian because I have so many of them guarding the entrance to my house on Moorea.
